An Externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is the basic training program offered to learn the foundations of this state-of-the-art therapeutic modality. It is a pre-requisite for certification and follow-up advanced training in EFT.This Online Externship has been adapted to spread out the teaching time in order to minimize video conferencing fatigue. It begins with an evening orientation followed by 5.5hrs of pre-recorded lecture with Dr. Susan Johnson on Friday, June 4, 2021, with the option of viewing this segment as a Home Study. The four days of live training that follow will be highly interactive and engaging, including clinical techniques and skills training exercises, video recordings, observation of live interviews and discussion of specific cases and clinical issues.Participants will be introduced to the EFT humanistic approach to psychotherapy formulated in the 1980’s and developed in tandem with the science of adult attachment, a profound developmental theory of personality and intimate relationships. Video demonstrations, lecture and exercises will orient participants to how attachment science shapes the understanding of individual dysfunction and health, as well as the nature of love relationships and family bonds. Video demonstrations will illustrate attachment views of human beings as innately relational, social, and wired for intimate bonding with others. Discussion will highlight how the EFT model prioritizes emotion and emotional regulation as the core organizing agents in individual experience and key relationship interactions.EFT will be explored as couples intervention; individual intervention to address depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (EFIT – Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy); as well as to repair family bonds (EFFT – Emotionally Focused Family Therapy). Observation of live and video recorded interviews will give participants an opportunity to see the principles of attachment science using non-pathologizing experiential and relational systems techniques to focus on and change core organizing factors in both the self and key relationships.
