Category: CE Events: Children

Suicide is the second most common cause of death among college students and is a concern with high performing college athletes. While playing sports provides both rewards and protective factors, it can also bring intensified pressures on a student's mental health. While many colleges and universities provide comprehensive systems of care for their general students, they are often underutilized by student athletes. In this expert discussion, we'll uncover: 1) Why these high-performing students can be at risk for mental health challenges. 2) The assumptions and biases that student athletes and coaching staff may face and the benefits of a psychologically safe culture. 3) How to build, from the ground up, suicide prevention and mental health programs that provide critical pathways of support. Objectives: 1.Participants will be able to identify risk and protective factors, along with most commonly occurring mental health struggles, associated with high performing college athletes. 2.Participants will be able to describe how athletic staff, family members, peers and clinicians can support mental health in collegiate athletes.3.Participants will be able to list key features of suicide prevention from a systems perspective.
