Treating the Addictions
Friday, March 04, 2022, 8:00 AM to Saturday, March 05, 2022, 5:00 PM EDT
Category: CE Events: Adult Individuals

In the midst of a pandemic and other forms of social upheaval, addiction of various types has worsened for many people. As clinicians look toward treating their patients in the context of a 'new normal', we must also level-set and define again how we understand the science of addiction after such a traumatic period. This course will return to the roots of the field while incorporating the latest clinical, theoretical, and research findings on addictive behaviors for adolescents and adults. This year we will pay special tribute to a founder of the field of Addiction Psychiatry and a dear member of the faculty at CHA and HMS, Edward J. Khantzian, who passed away in March 2021. Accordingly, topics will focus on the seminal self-medication hypothesis that Dr. Khantzian developed and championed throughout his long and distinguished career. We will explore core tenets of this theory, including affect, self-care, self-esteem and relationships, plus discuss addictive vulnerability and the correlation of certain populations with specific substances. Participants will gain a renewed perspective and purpose of how to approach addiction therapy with the techniques and values that Dr. Khantzian embodied every day.We invite mental health and health care clinicians, addiction specialists, and others concerned with the care and treatment of addicted individuals to join us for this memorable event.
